Current and Emerging Therapies for Functional Dyspepsia

by R. J. Saad; W. D. Chey, Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics

Summary. Functional dyspepsia represents a heterogeneous group of gastrointestinal disorders marked by the presence of upper abdominal pain or discomfort. Although its precise definition has evolved over the last several decades, this disorder remains shrouded in controversy. The symptoms of functional dyspepsia may overlap with those of other functional bowel disorders including irritable bowel syndrome and non-erosive reflux disease.

Definition of Bloating and Distension, In the literature, the terms "bloating" and "distension" are largely used synonymously, relying more on patient descriptions rather than on any attempt to record an actual change in girth.

Abdominal Bloating

Many people are familiar with a feeling of fullness and harsh bursting of the abdominal cavity (clothes too tight - flatulent belly). Flatulence and abdominal pain are the most frequent complaints from the abdominal cavity.

Often abdominal bloating is accompanied by additional symptoms of cramps and painful bowel. Those conditions are often cumbersome, very harsh and difficult to deal with.

Digestion

Digestion of food begins in the mouth (action of digestive enzymes contained in saliva). The food here is shredded and mixed with saliva.
In other sections of the gastrointestinal tract transported food is subjected to complex reactions - first in the stomach, then in the duodenum, then in the intestines.
